The North Bay Junior Lakers U11B team headed south this Easter weekend to take part in the Worlds Largest and Longest running girls hockey tournament, hosted by the Brampton Canadettes.
The the 55th edition of the tournament the U11B team stormed out to a 5-1 win in their opening game as they defeated the Etobicoke Dolphins, later on Friday afternoon they fell 3-1 to the Kemptville Storm to hold a 1-1-0 record after day 1.
On Saturday the Junior Lakers out scored their opponents 8-0 as they went on to defeat the Durham West Lightning 5-0 and the North Halton Twisters 3-0. This would gave the Junior Lakers a 3-1-0 record at the end of round robin play, placing them second in Pool A.
Sunday morning the U11B team would face the Smith Falls Cubs in the Semi-Finals. The Cubs finished in first place in Pool B. The Lakers struck first late in the second period to take a 1-0 lead into the third. The Lakers ended up scoring another goal to win the game 2-0 and earn a spot in the championship game.
In the Championship game the Junior Lakers found themselves matched up with the Kemptville Storm once again. The game needed extra time to find a winner, in overtime the Lakers found themselves on a 5 on 3 power play but could not score. The championship game needed a shootout where the Junior Lakers scored on 2 of 3 shots, Kemptville was stopped on all 3 shots. The Junior Lakers earned a 3-2 win in the championship game to claim another gold medal!
Next weekend the U11B Junior Lakers will head south once again as they have earned a spot in the Ontario Women’s Hockey League Championship Game! The Championship game is scheduled for 9am at Westwood Arena.
